Song Lyrics

Quite simply, well-written songs are one of my favorite things and a very important element in well-written songs is good lyrics. These are some of my favorites:

I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl. - Elliott Smith, Say Yes

I couldn't take my eyes off her, but that's not what I took off that night. - Marilyn Manson, Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand)

Hey, I found the safest place to keep all our tenderness, to keep all those bad ideas, to keep all our hope. It's here in the smallest bones, the feet and the inner ear. It's such an enormous thing, to walk and to listen. - The Weakerthans, My Favorite Chords

The sidewalks are watching me think about you, sparkled with broken glass. - The Weakerthans, Left and Leaving

I know you might roll your eyes at this, but I'm so glad that you exist. - The Weakerthans, The Reasons

In love with love and lousy poetry. - The Weakerthans, Aside

And we'll remember this when we are old and ancient, though the specifics might be vague. - The Decemberists, July, July!

We laid on the mattress and tumbled to sleep. - The Decemberists, The Soldiering Life

My girl, linen and curls, lips parting like a flag all unfurled. - The Decemberists, Summersong

I'm a punch line who's punch drunk, with my fist in a broken mirror. - Rocky Votolato, Portland Is Leaving

There's a secret magic past world that you only notice when you're looking back at it. All I wanna do is turn around. - Rocky Votolato, White Daisy Passing

The clouds are holding up the dawn. They're stilts or crutches, I can't tell which one. To keep the short days looking longer, or to keep the sun from falling on broken legs. But the night's disguise is wearing thin.
Caught me looking through your eyes, and, no, I'm not doing alright. I'm just as stupid and desperate as I've always been. All the uselessness I write, come at me with a knife. Cut this sickness from my mind, help me forget about a shattered lie, bleed my failure into something right.
The bossman said there's no more work this winter. So go on home now and check back in the spring. Some dreams turned out to be a nightmare that you can't afford, so it's coming in on a credit card. get yourself all prettied up, my love. Come here close, let me tie that ironed ribbon, on the dress I bought you. It's the perfect one, for the perfect night with the perfect woman. But the night's disguise is wearing thin.
Caught me looking through your eyes, and, no, I'm not doing alright. I'm just as stupid and desperate as I've always been. All the uselessness I write, come at me with a knife. Cut this sickness from my mind, help me forget about a shattered lie, bleed my failure in to something right.
Cut this sickness from my mind, helpme forget about a shattered lie, bleed my failure into something right. Hey, yeah. - Rocky Votolato, The Night's Disguise

There were boys kissing her lips and missing all the great things she had to say. - Owen Pye, A Song For a Girl

Thou shalt not use poetry, art, or music to get into girls' pants. Use it to get into their heads. - Dan le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip, Thou Shalt Always Kill

Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills. - Fall Out Boy, Hum Hallelujah

A wicked wind will blow your ribbons from your curls. - The Decemberists, Shankhill Butchers

I was on your porch, the smoke sank into my skin, so I came in side to be with you. We talked all night about everything you could imagine, cuz come the morning I'll be gone. And as our eyes start to close, I turn to you and I let you know that I love you.
My dad was sick. My mom, she cared for him. Her love, it nursed him back to life. And me, I ran. I couldn't even look at him fo fear I'd have to say goodbye.
And as I start to leave, he grabs me by the shoulder and he tells me, 'What's left to lose? You've done enough. And if you fail, well then, you fail, but not to us. Cuz these last three years, I know they been hard, but now it's time to get out of the desert and into the sun, even if it's alone.'
So now here I sit in a hotel off of Sunset. My thoughts bounce off of Sam's guitar. And that's the way it's been ever since we were kids, but now we've got something to prove.
And I, I can see their eyes, but tell me something, can they see mine?
Cuz what's left to lose? I've done enough, and if I fail, well then I fail, but I gave it a shot.
And these last three years, I know they been hard, but now it's time to get out of the desert and into the sun, even if it's alone.
Even if it's alone.
Even if it's alone.
I was on your porch last night and the smoke sank into my skin. - The Format, On Your Porch

Once in a blue moon there's a blue sky. I wear my blue jeans and fly my blue kite. Hands like a bluebird until the wind dies. Then the tears pour out of my blue eyes. - Bright Eyes, True Blue

The talking leads to touchind and the touching leads to sex and then there is no mystery left. - Rilo Kiley, Portions For Foxes
